Those seeking a divorce fall into three categories. Six of the dioceses want alternative primatial oversight; one diocese wants direct primatial oversight from the Archbishop of Canterbury himself, and an eighth diocese has expressed solidarity with the other seven but hasn't made a full commitment to leaving owing to the fact that they are in the midst of changing bishops and it would be inappropriate for an outgoing bishop to make a commitment for an incoming bishop.

According to two orthodox Episcopal bishops it takes only four dioceses legally and ecclesiastically to form a new province. (In the Roman Catholic Church it is three). Could such a new province occur in North America, "it very well could," said one of the bishops?
