The miracle performed by Elijah points to the resurrection which is to be revealed by Jesus Christ, who raised the dead and was raised himself on the third day as the first fruit of the redeemed humanity for which he shed his blood on the Cross.

May 22 2013 By virtueonline THE PRE-EMINENCE OF CHRIST: Ephesians 1:20-23

Ephesians 1:20-23 sees the role of Christ as basic to understanding, not only God, but also all creation. Christ cannot be relegated to being just a moral teacher or merely a good man. "For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the substance of his Mother, born in the world; Perfect God and Perfect Man." (Athanasian Creed)

May 17 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSING - POWER - Ephesians 1:19,20

First, you need the power that is victorious over death. The angels told the women at the tomb: "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen." (Luke 24:5,6) Death could not hold him in its grasp. He is living, not dead. The power of God is the power of life.

May 08 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS - VISION: Ephesians 1:15-18

Vision is the ability to see clearly. When I was in elementary school I began to find it difficult to see the blackboard from my desk. I improvised by boring a hole in my eraser and focusing through it. Eventually I discovered that I was short-sighted and needed glasses. It is one thing to be physically short-sighted and another thing to be spiritually short-sighted. Yet that is the condition of all human beings. All of us are sinners, and our sin blinds us from seeing God.

An engagement ring is meant to be a token of your serious intention to be married. It signifies your betrothal, or promise, to be wed. The modern Greek word for engagement ring is arrabon. It denotes a first installment, a pledge, part of the purchase price paid in advance which secures the legal claim to the person or the property under contract, and obliges the contracting party to pay the rest.

April 30 2013 By virtueonline How much of God do you want?

How absurd. Two people who love each other want all of each other; they cannot be content either with a half-given or half-received love; it must be all or nothing, else their protestations of true love are a mockery.

There are two powerful elements in a long-lasting marital union; two things that probably express the greatest gifts that the partners expect from and can give to each other -

April 24 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS - INHERITANCE Ephesians 1:11, 12

We all want our parents, and those who matter most to us, to be proud of us. We want to be a credit to them. We certainly don't want to let them down or to embarrass them in any way. If we have inherited a good name, or a family business, we want to uphold their reputation. If this is so for our earthly parents, how much more should it be for our heavenly parent? We are God's children, and destined for his heavenly home.

April 17 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS - CONSUMMATION: Ephesians 1:9, 10

Consummation: the state of being consummated, completion, fulfillment. St. Paul is writing about the consummation of God's plan for the universe. We are privileged, by revelation, to know what this plan is, how the future of the creation will see its fulfillment in Christ. At the moment the universe is not finished, it is not completed. It is a work in progress. That is why there is so much mess in human history. We are a world under construction. But one day creation will be completed.

April 15 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS - REDEMPTION

"In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding." (Ephesians 1:7,8)

This definition of what it means to be a Christian makes Christianity different from every other religion. A Christian has experienced Christian redemption and knows what it is. Redemption is central to the meaning of Christianity.

April 08 2013 By virtueonline SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS - CHOSEN: Ephesians 1:3-6

The apostle Paul begins his circular letter to the churches around Ephesus with an extended doxology - verses 3 through 14 are one extended sentence in Greek. It is a recitation of what God has done for us in Christ. He praises God for all his spiritual blessings in Christ. In a world in which there are so many problems, and a tendency to focus on all the trials and troubles we experience, it is a relief to be reminded of all the blessings we enjoy.
