Ephesians 1:20-23 sees the role of Christ as basic to understanding, not only God, but also all creation. Christ cannot be relegated to being just a moral teacher or merely a good man. "For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the substance of his Mother, born in the world; Perfect God and Perfect Man." (Athanasian Creed)

Vision is the ability to see clearly. When I was in elementary school I began to find it difficult to see the blackboard from my desk. I improvised by boring a hole in my eraser and focusing through it. Eventually I discovered that I was short-sighted and needed glasses. It is one thing to be physically short-sighted and another thing to be spiritually short-sighted. Yet that is the condition of all human beings. All of us are sinners, and our sin blinds us from seeing God.

How absurd. Two people who love each other want all of each other; they cannot be content either with a half-given or half-received love; it must be all or nothing, else their protestations of true love are a mockery.

There are two powerful elements in a long-lasting marital union; two things that probably express the greatest gifts that the partners expect from and can give to each other -

Consummation: the state of being consummated, completion, fulfillment. St. Paul is writing about the consummation of God's plan for the universe. We are privileged, by revelation, to know what this plan is, how the future of the creation will see its fulfillment in Christ. At the moment the universe is not finished, it is not completed. It is a work in progress. That is why there is so much mess in human history. We are a world under construction. But one day creation will be completed.
