January 17 2013 By virtueonline THE LOST FOUND - Ted Schroder

The three parables in Luke 15 are told in response to men and women of doubtful reputation hanging around Jesus. The Pharisees and religious professionals were not at all pleased at Jesus welcoming them. But if "the Lord is our Shepherd", he is not willing to give up on anyone no matter what their past or present may be. His priority is to reach everyone with his message of salvation, his good news of forgiveness, and restoration.

The parable of the sower may better be called the parable of the soils. Jesus said that the results of sowing the Word of the Gospel depends on the soil on which it falls. The responsibility of the evangelist is to broadcast the Word of God to as wide a variety of people as possible. The effectiveness of the sowing is conditioned by the receptiveness of the people. There are four types of ways people can respond.

December 27 2012 By virtueonline A PRAYER FOR THE NEW YEAR - (Ephesians 1:17, 18)

As followers of Jesus we walk by faith and not by sight, i.e. we rely upon our beliefs, our convictions, about God's purpose, his foreknowledge and predestination (2 Cor.5:7; Rom.8:29). We believe that God is working out his purposes in our lives. How do we find out that purpose and seek to cooperate with God's working? This calls for the prayer of faith.

December 25 2012 By virtueonline GOD'S GIFT OF LOVE - Ted Schroder

God's message at Christmas is - "With all my love... a little gift is on the way." That gift of love was the birth of Jesus. Jesus is the gift of God's love.

It is hard to believe that God's love would come in the birth of a baby in such an obscure way. Surely, if God came, he would do so in a more spectacular fashion?

December 20 2012 By virtueonline BEHOLD, I AM COMING SOON (Revelation 22)

It is obvious that for them to mean what they say they cannot be understood in terms of chronological time. Even in New Testament times scoffers said, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness"(2 Peter 3:1-10). In fact, the whole of the book of Revelation cannot helpfully be interpreted in terms in chronological time.

In Revelation, the dragon, Satan, had stolen from humanity the treasure of the kingdom of God, the pearl of great price, the treasure hidden in a field, the presence and power and reign of God, until the army of heaven, led by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, who is called Faithful and True, came and waged war by the Word of God. He won the battle by his perfect life, death on the Cross for our sins, and his resurrection, reversing the condemnation of Adam.

November 21 2012 By virtueonline HALLELUJAH - (Revelation 19)

Hallelujah occurs four times in Revelation 19:1-6 but nowhere else in the New Testament. It is derived from two Hebrew words meaning "Praise the Lord." Why is it used here? What is the occasion for praising the Lord? What would be the occasion for us to praise the Lord? What reasons would we have for praising the Lord? The first century Christians were being persecuted for their faith. What reason would they have for praising the Lord?

November 16 2012 By virtueonline A SONG OF THANKSGIVING - (Revelation 14 & 15)

(Rom.11:35,36) "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth...and he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else... For in him we live and move and have our being." (Acts 17:24-28) Billy Graham says that "a spirit of thankfulness is one of the most distinctive marks of a Christian whose heart is attuned to the Lord. Thank God in the midst of trials and persecutions."
