August 14 2014 By dvirtue ROBIN WILLIAMS: HOPE AGAINST HOPE - David Duggan

Then our paths diverged and for nearly 50 years all I learned of him was gleaned from the press or displayed on screens big and small. The depression which led to his death was likely a fellow traveler with his fame but that alone cannot explain why he took the final step off the ledge of life.

World War I produced a remarkable number of poets. My favorite is Studdert Kennedy, who was a chaplain. I have a copy of his Rough Rhymes of a Padre which contains poems that strive to make sense of all the sorrow of what Abraham Lincoln called “this mighty scourge of war”.

July 25 2014 By dvirtue WHAT DO YOU WANT? (John 1:38)

For some people it is money? We all want to be secure and to have enough to be comfortable. How much is enough? Will money by itself bring happiness, fulfillment, satisfaction? Of course not. The wealthiest people can be the most miserable. Yet most advertising is aimed at a materialistic lifestyle. Bigger is better. The more luxurious the better.

From the scriptural accounts, Jesus never spent too long in any one place, and the Gospels are replete with His travels.

Faith for the secularist is dependent on scientific evidence for the saving power of God. What is sufficient evidence for belief? What will convince the skeptic to believe? Some people will never believe without miracles. The secular worldview is disenchanted – there is no supernatural power or presence in the world. And even when there are miraculous signs in their lives, and in the lives of their loved ones they cannot believe.

July 09 2014 By dvirtue SELF-KNOWLEDGE : John 2:24,25

Thankfully not everyone has this knowledge. Many people grew up in secure homes with loving parents. Their memories are of sunshine and light with pleasant and affirming relationships. But even this does not always last. Tragedy strikes. Families disintegrate. Friends and relatives we counted on disappoint us. Those we thought trustworthy are revealed as unreliable. We are abandoned when we need them most. They prove to be fair-weather friends.

A perverse irony had brought me to that place, lying face up on the pavement looking at the “el” tracks overhead in the cold December noonday sun, utterly dependent on the services of EMTs and public safety officers, aware of my own frailty. I had just come from another lawyer’s offices, where I had edited legal papers in a case brought on behalf of a young single mother, an immigrant to these shores, who had been the victim of sexual harassment and whose case I was handling in court.

One of my favorite shows growing up had a lead character who fumbled all over himself when encountering an attractive woman. He shared an apartment with two women he ogled every chance he got, and they're reactions suggested they thought what he was doing was natural, comical, even boyishly innocent.

I grew up drinking all this in, unaware of the lies embedded there. Or what they were doing to me.

June 19 2014 By virtueonline THE AUDIENCE IN WORSHIP: (Revelation 4 and 5)

He said that his ministry philosophy had become: “The only way to capture people’s attention is entertainment. If I want people to listen to my message, I’ve got to present it in a way that grabs their attention long enough for me to communicate the gospel.” It worked. Attendance rocketed. “We’d produced consumers…too many were observing the show but not meeting God.” Then he had a heart attack.

June 12 2014 By virtueonline THE PERSONAL IDENTITY OF GOD

Martin Luther, in speaking of the real presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper, spoke of God's "ubiquity," i.e. he is everywhere. Our God is ubiquitous, everywhere and at all times present. This is why Jesus said, before he ascended to the Father: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matt. 28:20) God is not only loving, caring, and acting, our God is ubiquitous. He is larger than life, effusive, overflowing.
