VIRGINIA: Truro Rector Announces His Election as Nigerian Bishop

VIRGINIA RECTOR ANNOUNCES HE'LL BECOME A BISHOP UNDER NIGERIAN ARCHBISHOP

Dear Friend,

Earlier today, I received some news from Truro's friend, Archbishop Peter Akinola of Nigeria. I wanted you, as a part of Truro's family, to be among the first to receive this news

During today's meeting of the Church of Nigeria's House of Bishops, the bishops nominated and elected me as their missionary bishop for the Convocation for Anglicans in North America (CANA). CANA was created by the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) as a mission to meet the needs of Anglican Nigerians in the wake of the revisionist actions of the Episcopal Church USA at its last triennial General Convention in 2003. In this role of missionary bishop I have been called upon to provide oversight to the pastors of CANA congregations. I am truly humbled by this honor.

Today I had the opportunity to consult with Angela and Rachel, with our senior warden Jim Oakes, and with our chancellor Bob Dilling. I've also had the opportunity to talk with Bishop Lee over the phone in order to inform him of the election. Tonight I will be praying and consulting with Truro's vestry.

What does this mean for Truro? It most certainly does NOT mean that Truro will be left without a rector. I'm not going anywhere. When I announced my plans for my future retirement last year, I was committed to a smooth transition without any large gap or interim period. Even with this unexpected development, I am still fully committed to a smooth transition. I plan to continue as your rector until the rector search committee completes its job and a new rector has been selected.

I look forward to seeing you in worship on Sunday and at our previously scheduled Rector's Forum (9:30a.m. in the Chapel) or the Parish Meeting (12:00p.m. noon in the Main Sanctuary).

As always, your brother in Christ,

Martyn

--The Rev. Martyn Minns is the rector of Truro Episcopal Church in Truro, Virginia.
