RECIFE PRIEST RIPS ACTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA BISHOPS

RECIFE PRIEST RIPS ACTIONS OF CENTRAL AMERICA BISHOPS

By David W. Virtue

RECIFE, BR (10/18/2005)--The priest of the 1,000-strong largest parish in the evangelical Diocese of Recife ripped the proposal of a number of Latin American bishops for creating a Global Center, saying it was a sop to the American Episcopal Church who pays their bills.

The Rev. Miguel Uchoa, rector of The Church of the Holy Spirit wrote VirtueOnline saying that if it wasn't a drastic and pathetic move to please The Episcopal Church it would be plain funny. "Who do these people think they are deceiving? If you look at their proposal you can see it is a movement guided and controlled by ECUSA and its liberal paranoia." Recently 26 primates and bishops of Central and Latin America called for the setting up of a Global Center to honor what they called "Anglicanism's middle way."

The statement was signed by the primates of Brazil, Mexico and Central America, six other Brazilian bishops, the majority of the bishops of Central America, all the bishops of Mexico, plus Western Ecuador, Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Those who did not sign it include the Primate of the Southern Cone, the Most Rev. Gregory Venables and the bishops of Bolivia, Chile, Nthn. Argentina, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

"Take a look at the signatories of this proposal, and try to identify where the great majority of these bishops get their financial support? How do their dioceses survive? Try to find more than three of them that is not a voice for ECUSA in the South and Latin America."

"How can these people from Province Nine call themselves the "center"? They are affiliated to ECUSA, who has been suspended from the Communion and if The Episcopal Church does not repent it will be expelled from it. They should not even be members of the Commission on Theological Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (CETALC,) or The Latin America Anglican Theological Congress." The Congress was the brainchild of Canon Juan Marquez, international companionships officer in the Episcopal Church Center's Office of Anglican and Global Relations, and supervisor of the Commission.

When it was formed Marquez said, "It is expected that this event will make a significant contribution to the life and ministries of the Episcopal/Anglican Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is also expected that this event will provide not only an opportunity for theological reflection in the region's context, but also provide an avenue in re-examining and evaluating old and new methods and models of missionary strategy for church growth," he said.

Uchoa ripped ECUSA'S involvement. "The mission strategy at the center of this organization is to promote the Episcopal Church agenda on human sexuality. These bishops should speak clearly if their positions are NOT the same as the ECUSA, to which they belong and live by. They are the Global North voice in the south and nothing more than this."

Uchoa named names.

There are five Brazilian Bishops on this list, all liberals:

Revmo. Jubal Neves
Diocese Sul-Ocidental

Revmo. Naudal Gomes

Revmo. Sebastião Gameleira
Diocese de Pelotas

Revmo. Filadelfo de Oliveira

"Jubal Neves has already publicly defended in writing and on the internet the ordination of gay clergy. you can find his statement at WWW.IEAB.ORG.BR click diocese de St Maria."

"Orlando Santos is the Brazilian Primate who deposed Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti without any proof of the accusations he raised. This is the first time a bishop has been deposed as the first option by a Primate without consideration for any other measure."

Uchoa tore into the former Archbishop over the Diocese of Recife. "Filadelfo Oliveira is the bishop who betrayed my diocese and deposed 40 clergy totally illegally, with no due process, no court, no sentence...where in the canons is this to be found? In Brazil there is always a "Brazilian way" to do things and this is one of those occasions. Ask the 14 clergy of Recife who stayed loyal to the Province if they wanted this man to be their diocesan bishop. It is not hard to identify what they think about the theological issues that put the Anglican Communion where it is now."

Here is the list of those other Brazilian bishops who will follow him or whatever ECUSA decides that they must do.

"These bishops say that they are committed to the renewal of pluralism, diversity and inclusiveness as a permanent sign of Anglicanism. But in their dioceses and provinces they have persecuted evangelicals as well as charismatic clergy and churches. I have known people from Mexico who have been deeply persecuted because they were just orthodox. Brazil has persecuted evangelicals and charismatic for years. Ask SOMA when and how they were permitted to come to Recife in 1992? What kind of inclusiveness do they believe?"

"They say they are going to renew spirituality based on the Holy Scriptures, Creeds and our basic doctrine. Would anyone ask those bishops what they believe about the Virgin Birth? What they say about the resurrection of Jesus Christ? What their beliefs are about sin? If it is not enough, ask them what they think about the Holy Scriptures as the Word of God (as our understanding of what Anglicans proclaims), ask them about the normalizing of homosexual behavior, ask them if they are or are not ordaining gay clergy in those provinces? What part of the Creed do they believe? and what they call our Basic Doctrines?

Uchoa said the bishops complained about polarization in the Communion. "They are right, but this is a time for definition, and they don't have enough courage to show their hands. The truth is, it is they who are polarizing their dioceses and provinces. Was it not a polarizing action by the Primate of Brazil when he deposed Bishop Robinson? Was it not a polarizing action taken by Bishop Filadelfio Oliveira when he excommunicated (by internet) the 40 clergy of Recife?

"Please don't pretend to be what you are not; we all know who you are. The VIA MEDIA is a chameleon organization."

"Who are these people to talk about breaking agreements set up by the primates? They are the ones who supported ECUSA when they broke the agreement and advised the majority of the primates not to go ahead with the consecration of V. Gene Robinson. You cannot deceive everybody...you are the ones who are breaking the agreements, we are reacting and trying to survive what you have done."

The evangelical press said there was no center in this matter; there is no center in those signatories, said Uchoa. If we look at what Jesus said, he said "by their fruits you will recognize them..." Mt 7:16. We can see from this list that they could be called the Global Cemetery, where the Church of Christ (Anglican), in the places represented by them has been buried for years."

"As a Latin American Anglican, I am looking for a revival in the Anglican Church. Here in Recife and in different parts of the Latin America we are working for this... and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."
