Leaders should groom the youth to take over from them, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi, has said.

Orombi said it was the role of leaders to nurture the youth, noting that if their future was not shaped, they (young generation) would become useless.

Orombi was on Sunday preaching at St. Peter's Cathedral Bweranyangi in West Ankole Diocese in Bushenyi district.

He said the youth needed to be integrated in the leadership so that they prepare to take over in the future.

"Some of us sleep early and wake up late because of our age but for the youth, it is different."

Orombi said his entourage composed of young people, whom he was instilling in evangelical skills before he retired.

"When I retire, I will go to my country home in Nebbi and wait for heaven," Orombi said.

He also sympathised with the young generation for growing up in an age "that is full of corruption, greed, moral decay and famine."

The archbishop wondered why despite display of physical wealth in towns, the number of street children was on the rise.

"The majority of people have turned away from God. This is because their moral standards have gone down," he said, adding that many people were consulting demons.

Referring to a Saturday Vision report, he condemned the practice of men in Kampala using hotels at lunch time to commit adultery.

Orombi called upon Christians to pray for the Anglican Church, saying Satan had penetrated it through members agitating for the legalisation of homosexuality.

"Our eyes are now open; we know Jesus and we can't be taken back into darkness. We shall insist because we want to worship the living God."
