When the Episcopal Church's Presiding Bishop-elect Katherine Schori was asked by CNN whether it is a sin to be a homosexual, she could have responded:

"Do you mean simply being a homosexual - or do you mean engaging in homosexual acts?"

But, instead of any such clarification, Bishop Schori proceeded to respond as follows:

"I don't believe so. I believe that God creates us with different gifts. Each one of us comes into this world with a different collection of things that challenge us, and things that give us joy and allow us to bless the world around us.

"Some people come into this world with affections ordered toward other people of the same gender, and some people come into this world with affections directed at people of the other gender."

This astounding statement amounts to a contention that homosexuals are born that way - a claim that has been made, recurrently, by the Sodomy Lobby - with no such scientific evidence ever determined.

Bishop Schori is a scientist - but her field is oceanography, not genetics.

There are also inevitable and questionable progressions of her statement:

"Some people come into this world with affections ordered toward other people of the same gender, and some people come into this world with affections directed at people of the other gender."

If Bishop Schori can so salute people whose affections toward people of the same gender have produced the nation's largest death rate of AIDS - and now syphilis - how can this bishop exclude any of those whose affections toward one another are based upon pain (sadomasochists), age (pedophilia) and humans with freely consenting beasts (bestiality) - none of which sexual orientations have any of the rate of either AIDS or syphilis as homosexuality?

The Episcopal Convention's House of Deputies (priests and laity) voted 563 to 267 to express "regret for straining the bonds of affection in the events surrounding the General Convention of 2003 and for the consequences which followed; offer its sincere apology to those within the Anglican Communion who are offended by our failure to accord sufficient importance to the impact of our actions on our church ... and ask forgiveness as we seek to live into deeper levels of communication with one another."

The 75 million other Anglicans in the world's third-largest Christian denomination should surely recognize this resolution as an attempted escape hatch.

The 75 million other Anglicans should notify the Episcopal Church: "As soon as you either persuade the openly sodomist bishop of New Hampshire to resign or you unfrock him, we will reconcile with you and welcome you back into the Anglican Communion. Until then, we are compelled by conscience and by what runs throughout the Old and New Testament and throughout church history to sever connection with the Episcopal Church. For your leadership has lost millions of your church members, as the consequence of such distinct loss in Christian morality."

"Our Mother who art in heaven" was, until this week, a joke applying to female clergy feminist fanatics.

No more.

From Bishop Schori came the following in a sermon at the denomination's General Convention:

"That sweaty, bloody, tear-stained cross bears life. Our Mother Jesus gives birth to a new creation, and we are his children."

That's it.

"Mother Jesus" and "we are his children."

How often before in world history has any man been identified as "mother" followed immediately with the claim that "We are his children"?

Did Lady Julian of Norwich really do this in the 14th century, as some claim? Or was this an attempt to promote acceptance of Episcopal transsexuals - just as Presiding Bishop-elect Schori has both called for - and voted for - the acceptance of sodomy?

In England, the London Times headlined this as "OUR MOTHER JESUS - A SERMON BY THE U.S. CHURCH'S NEW HEAD" - with the following lead:

"The Episcopal Church in America descended into chaos last night after leading bishops on both the liberal and conservative wings disassociated themselves from a last-gasp effort to avert a schism with the worldwide Anglican Communion.

"Just hours after its newly elected woman head preached a sermon in praise of 'our mother Jesus,' the Episcopal Church agreed to 'exercise restraint' in appointing any more gay bishops after a tense day of debate and argument.

"A proposal put forward by Bishop Frank Griswold committing the Church to 'exercise restraint by not consenting to the consecration of any candidate for the episcopate whose manner of life presents a challenge to the wider Church and will lead to further strains' sailed through the 300-member House of Bishops on a show of hands and was approved 75-34 by clergy delegations and 72-32 by lay delegations in the House of Deputies."

But, as the London Times reported:

"This fragile consensus was immediately shattered by leading bishops on both sides.

"Thirty liberal bishops issued a statement of dissent, saying that they could not abide by the new resolution. Bishop John Chane of Washington, a prominent church liberal who officiates at the National Cathedral in America's capital, said that he would not agree to block the ordination of any gay bishop. 'I will defy the resolution by consenting after prayer and careful consideration to any person duly elected by a diocese in this church,' he said."

The remaining 75 million members of the Anglican Communion all over the world will no doubt note Bishop Chane's immediate announcement that he will no way "exercise restraint" as Presiding Bishop Griwold pleaded and a majority of the convention voted.

In the Washington, D.C., diocese, which extends into Maryland, the Mattachine Society surely has an unprecedented opportunity.

This national organization of sadomasochists should comb its membership for sadists and masochists who are Episcopalians and would be willing to advance public acceptance of their sexual orientation.

Imagine the following letter to Bishop Chane:

"Right Reverence and Dear Sir:

"I am your fellow Episcopalian, as well as one of the national board members of the Mattachine Society, nationally headquartered in New York.

"You may be familiar with our sexual orientation: Pain is Pleasure - Both Inflicted and Received.

"We have noted with considerable interest your well-publicized support of sodomy-acceptance. Therefore, we presume you must, in all fairness, not oppose sadomasochism since we have none of homosexuality's AIDS or syphilis record, which has killed so many hundreds of thousands.

"Presuming, therefore, that you have similar tolerance for S&M, it would be most meaningful to me and my fellow Episcopalians who are so oriented, if, next Good Friday at the Washington Cathedral, for half an hour prior to the traditional three hour service, two of us - one sadist and one masochist - could, during a procession throughout the chancel and all aisles of the Cathedral, illustrate with full reality the scourging of Jesus.

"I can assure you that we will provide the full lashing of an Episcopal masochist done by an Episcopal sadist - to illustrate the full impact of Our Lord's Passion.

"Counting on your tolerance of all sexual orientations, I will look forward to hearing from you, that we may plan together this Washington Cathedral S&M scourging.

"Faithfully yours,"
