CAPA Bishops Must Stand Firm Against Homosexuality and Lambeth

CAPA Bishops Must Stand Firm Against Homosexuality and Lambeth

LETTER FROM HARARE

By the Rev Morris Brown Gwedegwe
10/11/2007

It is most unfortunate that the African (CAPA) Anglican Bishops meeting in Mauritius recently registered their wish to attend the Lambeth Conference 2008 in Canterbury.

I have serious objections to homosexuality based on our cultural beliefs, which are supported by Holy Scripture. God himself condemns same sex marriages. In Genesis 19, we see two whole cities and their inhabitants destroyed because of it. We are not threatened by such punishment. Leviticus 18:22 reads, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination." What has gone wrong with our consciences? What is so special about the British and the Americans? The Bible condemns such practices. We Africans are being used as scapegoats. Our value in God is being undermined.

The Church of God found refuge in Africa. God came in the form of "JESUS" to Africa for refuge. Now death is looming and Americans and British want to use Africa. Not so, my lord archbishops.

Dear Bishops and Primates, this is the time to abide in Jesus in Spirit and Truth. Why should we be fooled? If Eve was created from Adam, why go against nature? The Americans and British want us to bow to them as though they are mini-gods. Never. I call on The Most Rev. Peter Akinola,(Anglican Primate of Nigeria) to continue the journey towards separation. Please educate your fellow bishops that the wider road leads to hell. Call a spade a spade and I quote, "you do it and you go to hell." All Africans who say homosexuality is not an issue miss their fifth sense. They have been brainwashed by the American dollar. How can you tolerate or even imagine anal sex and all the dirtiness involved in this kind of behavior? Come my brothers, fight against this. The new Chairman of CAPA, the Most Rev. Ian Ernest, please, we in the Diocese of Harare urge you to stand for Africa. We want you and us to be on the side of Jesus and not of man.

The American Bishops lied that there was no September 30, 2007 deadline calling for a stop to same sex blessings and homosexual ordinations. The Primates resolved that in Dar es Salaam. When they went back to America, and debated the issue, they were busy preparing to elect the Rev. Tracey Lind, a lesbian, to be Bishop of Chicago. At the same time, whilst they were preparing for the New Orleans meeting of the HOB, Archbishop Rowan Williams was conducting a secret service for gay priests in England, all for the love of the dollar. Archbishop Williams has no morals. He has compromised himself on the Civil Partnership motion passed at the CofE General Synod. We Africans? We are too soft.

Read again your Communique pointer number 5. "We are convinced that what is at stake in this crisis is the very nature of Anglicanism - to understand it simply in terms of the need for greater inclusivity in the face of changing sexual ethics is a grave mistake. It is not just about sexuality, but also about the nature and person of Jesus Christ, the truth of the Gospel and the authority of the Bible. We see a trend that seems to ignore the careful balance of reformed catholicity and missionary endeavor that is our true heritage, and seeing it replaced with a religion of cultural conformity that offers no transforming power and no eternal hope."

If we are to go by this, your statement, then there is no need for African Bishops to go to the Lambeth Conference next year. There is no need to read word by word the HOB TEC's undertakings, which are not binding on us at all. Why waste time? Are we not able to start our own Anglican Communion in Africa? If so, we can then become missionaries to the West for they have lost their way. They need caring shepherds and here we are. Remember, it is Africa where Jesus came for refuge. It is Africa where Moses was educated. It is Africa where Abraham learnt to stay in the Promised Land. It is Africa where Joseph came to prepare for the journey to the Promised Land. It is Africa that produced the best writing and teaching of the Bible - the Old Testament. The first five books (Torah) were said to have been written by Moses. Africa wake up! We have prophets amongst ourselves whom God is using and we are ignoring them. The Most Rev. Peter Akinola, the Most Rev Benjamin Nzimbi, Archbishop Elect Benjamin Ben Kwashi, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Nolbert Kunonga, the Rt. Rev. Elson Jakazi, and many other African Bishops who speak the truth. Let us follow them.

David Virtue (VOL www.virtueonline.org) is trying his best to help Africa see the light and we are ignoring him. Africa, let us follow the Scriptures and ignore events like the HOB of The Episcopal Church, Archbishop Rowan Williams and Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori. These are gambling spiritually with peoples' lives, and they think they have the muscle to force us to change. Africa must use God's muscle. Let us be brave and abide in Jesus Christ. Avoid being brainwashed by these westerners. They have no worries to battle compared with a hungry Africa. It is Africa that has HIV/AIDS. It is Africa that has Malaria. Look, these Americans want to plant homosexuality on top of these other diseases and divert our focus.

All our attention now is trying to sift through what the Americans really want.

My brothers, let us forget about the Americans and the British. Let us forge ahead with what our brother, the Most Rev. Peter Akinola is saying. Let us give him our full support. Zimbabwe bishops Nolbert Kunonga and Elson Jakazi are courageous men. They speak God's language. Let us give them our support. Let them listen to what David Virtue is saying. Help not only Africa, but even the bishops in the West who do not want his kind of analysis and orthodox approach.

With all this debate, the small man is suffering. All the money we are putting into the campaigns and joint meetings, the small man is suffering.

Let us as Africans shout NO TO HOMOSEXUALITY and save our own nation.

Let us all shout NO TO HOMOSEXUALITY and receive God's blessings.

I hope and pray that the new chairman of CAPA, the Most Rev. Ian Ernest, will take heed of these few comments. Being in the Lambeth Design Group Committee is no passport to lead people to hell. That hat can be thrown away, and you put on rags like King David. The new Archbishop of Southern Africa, the Most Rev Thabo Makgoba, being on the Lambeth Conference Design Group Committee is not an issue. The hat can be thrown away and you can follow the narrow path to Christ. The British are clever, they want to use Africans. They put them in the forefront and make available a lot of money to us. Africans become victims if they take their money.

I am concerned with the softness from our African Camp. We think and write very intelligent communiques, but action is always delayed. Let us move with speedily to God so our children will have a legacy to follow.
