Four bishops, all revisionists, nominated for office

LETTER FROM BISHOP PARSLEY REGARDING HIS NOMINATION FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDING BISHOP OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH

25 January 2006 Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul
To the Clergy and People of the Diocese of Alabama

The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop made its report on 25 January nominating four bishops of our church for this office. I am deeply honored and deeply humbled to be one of those nominated, along with my esteemed colleagues Bishop Neil Alexander of Atlanta, Bishop Ted Gulick of Kentucky, and Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori of Nevada.

This has been a prayerful process of discernment. Frankly I resisted it at first, but have finally shared in it with a sense of obedience to my ordination vows. I love serving Christ with you in the Diocese of Alabama and am grateful for God's many blessings during these nearly ten years together. Unless I am called to this new role in the church's life, I am eager to continue as your bishop and servant in Christ. We have a compelling vision for ministry in Alabama and I want to do all in my power, by the grace of God, to help us accomplish it.

I ask for your prayers for Becky and me in the months to come and most especially for the church as we all seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Your love and support will mean a great deal.

The election for Presiding Bishop will take place in the House of Bishops Sunday, June 18th. Meanwhile we have very important work to do for the Kingdom of God in Alabama and I am and will remain fully committed to our ministry and mission together in this great diocese of the Episcopal Church.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

The Rt. Rev. Henry N. Parsley, Jr.
Bishop of Alabama
