March 26 2004 By virtueonline AAC: Five Senior Bishops Respond to House of Bishops' Censure

The House of Bishops continues its long retreat from its sworn responsibilities concerning the Christian faith, from the time of Bishop James Pike to Bishop John Spong's "12 Theses", to its present failure to support faithful Episcopalians in unfaithful dioceses.

Retired bishops FitzSimons Allison of South Carolina, Maurice Benitez of Texas, William Cox (assisting) of Oklahoma, Alex Dickson of West Tennessee and William Wantland of Eau Claire confirmed 110 individuals from five congregations and celebrated the Eucharist on March 14 in Akron, without the knowledge and permission of the Bishop of Ohio, J. Clark Grew II. They were joined by Bishop Robinson Cavalcanti of the Diocese of Recife in northern Brazil.

March 25 2004 By virtueonline PLANO: A Broken Ladder. Rector says HOB Plan Should be Ignored

The Episcopal Church (ECUSA) voted at last year’s convention to consecrate as bishop a man who is living in a homosexual partnership. In addition, they voted to regard the blessing of same sex unions as within the boundaries of church practice. Both decisions are fatal errors and cannot stand the test of time. God will not bless these actions that so flagrantly disregard the clear teaching of Scripture – teaching so abundantly clear even in a casual reading of the Bible.

March 25 2004 By virtueonline NACDP: HoB Oversight Plan will take 'extraordinary new levels of trust'

"The Network bishops will do what they can to enable the plan’s success," he added. "I am deeply concerned that we are able to offer Adequate Episcopal Oversight as the Primates understand it. The question is whether there is the will in the Episcopal Church to make this plan into that," said Duncan. "My commitment, and that of the Network, is to stand in solidarity with people of faith who are desperately struggling in some of our dioceses."

March 25 2004 By virtueonline FIFNA: HoB DEPO Statement Unacceptable

We have a church (or as Father Sam Edwards would say, an "unchurch") that has been declared to be in rebellion, disobedient to the whole counsel of God, by the vast majority of baptized members of the Anglican Communion, as well as the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. Although the bishops say that the church is "to be a trustworthy sign to the world of this costly reconciling power of God," they mean that the orthodox must be "reconciled" to the agenda of ECUSA.

March 25 2004 By virtueonline ECUSA: A History of Sexual Abuse by Clergy

South Australia, AUS. A South Australian police task force into child sex abuse within the Anglican Church had identified 217 victims and 48 possible offenders, police said today. However the number of victims could rise to more than 400 as investigations continued, Police Commissioner Mal Hyde said. Mr Hyde today likened the scale of police investigations into child sex abuse to those for the infamous Snowtown bodies-in-the-barrels murders in 1999. (The Age, July 16 2003)

March 24 2004 By virtueonline AAC: House of Bishops Approves Inadequate Oversight Plan

“Adequate” oversight must be determined by those who are seeking it. The House of Bishops considered the effect of their plan upon the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Presiding Bishop, individual bishops and their House as a whole; but the voices of the people in desperate need of AEO were not heard. The plan is designed to be viable only where it is unnecessary, that is, in the few dioceses where bishops agree to AEO. It gives no relief to orthodox beleaguered Episcopalians.

March 24 2004 By virtueonline CAMP ALLEN: New Oversight Plan 'Dead On Arrival'

But the plan, produced at a meeting in Navasota, Texas, may not prevent further problems in a denomination that has been in turmoil since the consecration of its first openly gay bishop last year. Conservative activists rejected a very similar proposal last November, and one cleric said that the new plan was "dead on arrival."

March 24 2004 By virtueonline ENS: Caring For All The Churches: A Response of the House of Bishops

We know the unity with God that Christ has won for humanity, he won through the victory of his passion. We are mindful of the suffering of Jesus who, on the Cross and through his resurrection, reaches into every corner of alienated human life, reconciling and restoring to the household of God all who come to him in faith. By God's grace the church is continually called, in repentance and hope, to be a trustworthy sign to the world of this costly reconciling power of God.
