THE THIRTY-NINE ARTICLES AND REFORMATION ANGLICANISM

Foreword

In February 2005, the Global South Institute for Mission, Leadership and Public Policy sponsored the second annual Janani Luwum Memorial Lecture at Uganda Christian University. This lecture series commemorates the witness of the late Archbishop Janani Luwum, who gave up his life for the truth of the Gospel. The Global South Institute, among its other aims, seeks to address issues of Anglican identity and mission, particularly bringing in the perspective of the church in Africa.

The Rev. Dr. Ashley Null gave the opening lecture on "The Thirty-Nine Articles and Reformation Anglicanism: Biblical Authority Defined and Applied." Dr. Null is a noted scholar of the English Reformation and of Thomas Cranmer in particular. As will become clear, he believes the Thirty-Nine Articles continue to be relevant in the current fractious disputes over authority in the Anglican Communion.......

Author's Preface

Today, few would deny that an increasingly growing gulf stands between the teachings of the Bible and the values of affluent, Western culture. The question is how should the Church respond. Many good-intentioned Anglicans are trying to resolve the tension by revising the church's traditional teachings to be more acceptable to (what they honestly believe to be) the Spirit-led insights of contemporary society. However, many others, especially those in the Global South, feel equally strongly that such changes are simply a betrayal of Gospel truth, biblical authority and Anglican tradition. They urge reasserting a vibrant Christian Orthodoxy whose mission is to transcend and to transform all human cultures, including the prevailing post-modern intellectual mores of the world's wealthy nations.........
