Hormone therapy for people attempting to 'transition' from male to female carries major health risks, a new study suggests.

Published by the American College of Physicians, it indicated that men who took female hormones for two years were over five times more likely to develop a potentially dangerous clot than men who didn't.

The academic journal is one of the most widely quoted and influential medical journals in the world.

Hormone 'therapy'

Hormone 'therapy' involves giving testosterone to women and oestrogen to men.

The US study compared medical records of over 5,000 transgender people against more than 97,000 others.

It also suggested that men who took hormones for more than six years were ten times more likely to have a stroke caused by a blood clot than the general population.

'Risks'

The study concluded: "These results may indicate the need for increasing vigilance in identifying long-term vascular side effects of oestrogen therapy".

Senior author Michael Goodman of Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health said the findings could be "taken into consideration when planning follow-up and evaluation of patients".

"The confirmation of this risk is good to have so patients can be warned", added fellow author Dr Joshua Safer.

'Extremely worried'

In the UK earlier this year, a leading doctor warned that hundreds of gender-confused children are having their health put at risk by NHS-prescribed puberty-blocking hormones.

Dr Lucy Griffin, consultant psychiatrist at Bristol Royal Infirmary, said she was "extremely worried" about the adverse effects the drugs are having on adolescents.

The 'treatments' have been also known to cause osteoporosis, while some have linked the drugs with causing breast cancer, liver disease, disfiguring acne, and high blood pressure.

Unscientific and unsafe

Last year, a top paediatrician spoke out against the harms being caused by transsexual medical 'treatments', slamming them as "nothing less than institutionalized child abuse".

Michelle Cretella, President of the American College of Pediatricians, said that the 'transition-affirming' approach to treating children with gender dysphoria is both unscientific and unsafe.

Cretella said that in spite of this, medical organisations are ignoring the facts and are instead conducting "massive, uncontrolled, and unconsented experimentation" on children.

She concluded by saying, "while the transition-affirming movement purports to help children, it is inflicting a grave injustice on them".
