KENYA: Rebellious Kenyan Bishops Defy their Archbishop to attend Lusaka ACC-16

The Archbishop of Kenya has written to his province and friends saying that a delegation from his province will attend the ACC-16 in Lusaka, despite his public statements to the contrary and his own personal direction to them.

"I am sorry to have to inform you that the Anglican Church of Kenya delegation to ACC-16 have decided to attend. The leader of the delegation is Bishop Joel Waweru who has been involved in the Indaba 'Bishops in Dialogue' meetings for a number of years.

"It seems that the rejection of the moral and spiritual authority of the Primates gathered in Canterbury earlier this year by the ACC Chairman, Bishop Tengatenga, without rebuke from the Archbishop of Canterbury, is contributing to a climate which encourages further breakdown of godly order.

"Irrespective of their formal standing, the fact is that these delegates have set their own judgement against that of their Primate on a matter that does not touch on core doctrine and in doing so have set a dangerous precedent. They are representing themselves and not the Anglican Church of Kenya.

"I very much regret this development and am releasing a public statement in view of the confusion this unilateral action could otherwise cause."

The Most Revd Dr Eliud Wabukala, kis Archbishop of Kenya and Bishop, All Saints Cathedral Diocese, Nairobi
