Church of the Advent is a two-and-a-half year-old church plant rooted in the downtown neighborhood of Baker in Denver, Colorado.

I was the assistant pastor at Wellspring Church in Englewood when I sensed God calling me to plant a church.

Wellspring sent me and a team of 50 others to begin ministry in the vibrant and diverse neighborhood of Baker, in downtown Denver.

Since the beginning, we've worshipped in an old union hall owned by a non-profit. Here, we rent 24/7 office space, worship facilities, and a prayer room. Liturgical worship is the central hub of our life together.

Our worshippers increasingly come from a variety of traditions, socioeconomic groups, and age ranges (we have more babies and grey hairs than ever.)

We value each of the three streams - Scripture, the Spirit, and the sacred - and find ourselves continually called back to each in new ways.

Currently, we are embarking on a sermon series through Colossians and committing to memorizing 500 verses from this letter as a church.

Pray for us. One of Advent's distinctive graces is our focus on personal discipleship.

Through a 12-week "Relational Discipleship" process, each new Adventure walks through their unique story and God's grand narrative with a spiritual guide.

Discipleship Groups continue this process by teaming Adventure to share, grow, and serve.

As we begin to grow numerically, we are devoting more time to training lay leaders who can help others grow in their faith. Pray for us.

Advent is also deeply committed to revealing Advent is also deeply committed to revealing God's presence in our urban home: the Baker neighborhood.

We are heavily invested in tutoring local school children and the mentally disabled, creating community in public housing, and reaching out to Denver's vibrant micro-brew culture.

The whole church also comes together twice a month to serve and to celebrate: past gatherings have included neighborhood potlucks, coffee house concerts, and leaf raking.

We are beginning to see the neighborhood respond, and our new friends are encountering God in fresh ways. Praise God. If you're ever in Denver, stop by and see us.

You'll find us seeking to be deeply "with" God, each other, and our neighborhood . . . and you'll find God using us in spite of ourselves.
