Welby is the same generation as I am, and we were both well educated. Most boys of our generation were brought up reading Orwell's Animal Farm, and Huxley's Brave New World. We knew about 'Newspeak.' We were well aware of the dangers of a culture, or a highly politicised society to use one word for public consumption that actually meant another.

Welby, who at some stage surely must have studied theology, knows the word "anthropomorphism"--attributing human characteristics to God. Seven-year-old Talitha in my Sunday School will shyly but sweetly explain to Archbishop Welby why she doesn't think God has a face, hands, feet, eyes, ears, or backside to sit on his throne, even though the Bible ascribes human body parts to God.

In Arabic, the imam made the declaration: 'Allah is the greatest; I bear witness that there is no other God but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.'

It was part of a concert to commemorate the armistice and was carried out without the church's permission.

The imam is seen reciting the Muslim call to prayer in front of around 400 churchgoers in Blackburn Cathedral

However, attendance at Christmas services in 2017 was the highest in a decade, at 2.68 million, suggesting that services are increasingly seen as an element of festivities rather than regular religious worship. The figure was a marginal increase on last year's 2.6 million.

Now the long knives are out for the Very Reverend Professor Percy, who is facing claims of "conduct of an immoral, scandalous or disgraceful nature incompatible with the duties of the office or employment". A formal complaint was lodged against him after he sought a pay review for college staff under gender pay gap rules. Reports say this could have led to a pay rise of up to £10,000 for Percy as well as a salary hike for a senior female staff member.

They highlight the call for "radical inclusion" and the universality of God's love.

From a conservative-orthodox point of view it is notable that the language in the letter is almost entirely that of the LGBT side of the debate. 'Respect' appears six times, 'inclusion' four times, the phrase 'everyone has a place at the table' twice, and the pain felt by some as a result of the church's ongoing debates is acknowledged on two occasions. In full apologetic mode, the bishops state: 'As a Church we have continually failed our sisters and brothers in Christ'.

Couples where the bride and groom were born into the same sex can have church weddings as long as one has an official gender recognition certificate for their acquired gender, its leaders said.

Weddings between brides and grooms who have both changed sex can also go ahead as long as both have the legal recognition.

The move to invite a preacher from another faith has been fiercely criticized by Adrian Hilton in his blog, bearing the curious name of Archbishop Cranmer. The Anglican blog post said it was hard to comprehend how an imam speaking at a Eucharist service sermon would respect divine worship, a sacred act in itself, an action which should be conducted as per the formularies and associated rites of CofE.
